Here are a few items to consider this autumn: Clean and inspect your chimney and furnace Have a professional chimney sweep check your fireplace and chimney. Annual cleanings will remove any buildup of creosote that could lead to a chimney fire. Inspections can detect obstructions or cracks in the chimney. Also, have your furnace cleaned and inspected to keep it running trouble-free and to prevent carbon monoxide leakage into your home. Autumn is also an excellent time to change your furnace filters. Check Your Detectors Check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and make certain they are in good working order. Clear away leaves and needles Keep your roof, gutters, drains and landscaping free of leaves and pine needles to eliminate fire hazards and prevent water back-ups. Raking leaves can be a strenuous task. Work at a proper pace; do not try to pull too many wet leaves at one time. Create at least a 30-foot safety zone around your home by raking leaves, dead limbs, and twigs. Remove dead tree branches that extend over roofs. Disposing of leaves Do not dispose of leaves by burning: this can lead to brush fires, air pollution and breathing difficulties. Instead, have them hauled away by your private refuse hauler or community pick-up program or dispose of them at a community drop-off site, or at a commercial yard waste processing site in your area. Other options include spreading them as mulch around trees, shrubs and in planting beds or adding them to your compost pile. Wear gloves while raking leaves to prevent blisters and possible allergic reactions. Wear ear protection when using a blower. Prevent insect bites and stings Be aware of the presence of bees while you are working or eating outdoors or attending outdoor events. Remove possible nesting sites around your home by inspecting the exterior, particularly the eaves and shutters. Seal any openings larger that 1/8". Watch for bees entering or leaving the same area of your home or yard. Examine your lawn before mowing, particularly around fruit trees.
